People who aren’t there

Some years ago I found some photographs of my grandfather who had died a long time ago. Whilst looking at these it led me to wondering, could I make a portrait of him now? What could I use to make a portrait of a person who isn’t here any longer? What sense of the person can you get?

I chose a simple personal article, a person’s hat. From this, placed on a chair, you might get a sense of the person. Who they are, what they may be, or indeed may have been. A window to a person who isn’t there.
